Breakbeat Science began in Manhattan, New York City, in 1996 as a drum-and-bass record shop co-founded by DJ DB and DJ Dara. The store became a prominent seller of jungle and drum-and-bass records, and the business added its label in 1998. Among its early releases was Dune’s “Vertical Drop / Contact,” issued in 1999. By July 2001, the label had put out twelve 12-inch singles and its first CD, DJ DB’s The Secret Art of Science; it also released DJ Trace’s 23° From Vertical that year. Later albums included DJ Dara’s Exercise 01 in 2003 and The Antidote in 2004. DJ DB and Stakka’s single “Groupies” came out in 2017. DJ Dara attributed the store’s decline chiefly to the shift from physical records to digital formats.
