Insanity Records launched in 2015 as a joint venture between Insanity Group and Sony Music UK, after Insanity Group founder Andy Varley put forward the idea of a dance-focused label to Sony. The partnership was negotiated by Varley and Sony Music UK chairman and CEO Jason Iley. The label is independently owned and works as a frontline label, using Sony’s infrastructure for distribution, sales and sync. It is based in London.
Its drum and bass output covers neurofunk and liquid as well as dancefloor, jungle and ragga jungle, with music from SHY FX, James Hiraeth, Fred V, Vibe Chemistry and Raphaella. Releases include Cyantific and Kattison’s “Up and Down (Cyantific Remix)” in 2016 and James Hiraeth’s “Chasing Highs (Slow Motion)” in 2022.
The label later moved beyond its original dance brief. It released Craig David’s album Following My Intuition, a UK No. 1 in 2016, and Tom Grennan’s Evering Road, which topped the UK albums chart in 2021, and has also worked with Joy Crookes. Alice Beal joined as label manager in 2016 and became managing director in July 2021.
