No U Turn Records was based in Acton, west London, where its studio began recording in 1992. The independent studio and label encouraged young DJs to make jungle and drum and bass, with releases also associated with darkside and techstep. Housed on the third floor of an old industrial building, it developed tracks through club testing: DJs played exclusive dub plates, then adjusted the music in response to the crowd. Nico shaped the bass with distortion, while final mixes were dubbed live at the desk using EQ, mutes, reverb and bass sweeps.
Nico and Ed Rush made early records together, including Bludclot Artattack, the label’s third release, in 1993. Other artists connected with No U Turn included Dom & Roland, Fierce and Optical; related imprints were Saigon and Nu Black. The studio closed roughly a decade after its first sessions. Later Ed Rush releases on the label include August (2014 Remaster) and Selecta (2024 Remaster).
