D-EDGE began in Campo Grande in 2000 and opened in São Paulo’s Barra Funda district in 2003, taking over a former club space on Rua Olga. Renato Ratier founded the club and served as its owner and resident DJ. Muti Randolph and Ratier collaborated on the venue’s design, and its programming developed around house and techno. Early offerings ranged from nu-disco and minimal to electro, progressive and electro-house, with progressive trance, drum and bass, and a Monday rock night hosted by João Gordo also on the programme.
Early nights included Freak Chic, which focused on house, and Mothership, which centred on techno before taking the name NAVE. Luiz Pareto, Marcos Morcerf and Ratier were among the Freak Chic residents. Line-ups have featured DJ Marky and Makoto.
A 2010 expansion brought a lounge and terrace, an LED-surrounded dance floor and an upgraded sound system. The club operates three record labels covering house and techno, alongside minimalist, conceptual and experimental electronic music. The Cool Awards named D-EDGE Brazil’s best underground club in 2004 and 2005. In 2009, DJ Mag ranked it ninth in its worldwide club ranking and first among clubs in the Americas.
