DarkLab is a Hobart-based event promoter and arts operator, founded in 2016 by MONA owner David Walsh, with Leigh Carmichael as creative director. It is a MONA subsidiary and produces the Dark Mofo festival. Its Hobart operations include the Odeon Theatre, Altar Bar and In The Hanging Garden, where it has also run events.
DarkLab developed Altar with property developer Riverlee as part of the In The Hanging Garden precinct. The live music venue occupies the ground floor of the former Tattersall’s Hotel on Murray Street. DarkLab began programming and promoting live music at Odeon Theatre in September 2019. The theatre holds 1,200 people. Altar’s Dark Mofo launch that year featured Briggs, Kelsey Lu, Kira Puru and Sarah Mary Chadwick. Its events have included the house and electronica night Radium, as well as bookings such as Caucasian Opportunities, X-Coast and Roska.
