Klunkerkranich is a rooftop venue and cultural space in Berlin’s Neukölln district, on the upper deck of the Neukölln Arcaden car park. Its founders, Josh, Jules and Dorle, started with monthly basement parties in 2008, then ran a bar called Zuhaus beneath the former Kindl brewery. Plans for the rooftop project took shape in late 2012, construction began the following March, and the venue opened in May 2013.
Its programme spans concerts, performances, club nights, DJ sessions, festivals, workshops and discussions. Activities have also included theatre, poetry, performance art and cinema. Indoor event spaces include the Wohnzimmer and Hinter den Alpen, a club room that opened in 2017 on the car park’s seventh deck. The venue hosts DJ and band parties from Thursday to Sunday, as well as DIY Kit Day, a recurring gathering for modular-synth enthusiasts and electronic-music artists organised with Berlin Modular Society.
Hinter den Alpen books electronic dance music, including techno, house and disco, and has a Kirsch Audio sound system. Artists appearing at Klunkerkranich events have included Ivana, Lola Brennt, anna G and Agem. In 2015, Klunkerkranich featured as a rooftop garden project in the documentary Du musst dein Ändern leben, which followed the project and its team.
