Lakota was established in Bristol in 1992 by the Burgess family, with Marti and Bentleigh Burgess running the venue. It occupies the remaining part of the historic Stokes Croft Brewery site and has three event spaces. Its early programme focused on house, with LTJ Bukem among the DJs; later music included reggae, jungle and drum and bass. During Bristol’s 1990s club boom, people travelled from across the UK, including Wales, to attend. Lakota’s nightclub space has four rooms; the venue is Black-owned and rooted in Bristol’s underground culture.
Events have taken place at Lakota itself, Moon Club and The Coroners Court. Lakota has hosted Goldie, Sub Zero and Carasel. Its Rumble in the Jungle nights introduced jungle to younger audiences and drew appreciation from older Jamaican DJs, and the event has an annual anniversary edition. The Tribe of Frogs psytrance night has run at Lakota since 2004. Since 2006, the promoter has worked with young organisers on nights spanning several club styles. A campaign in 2007–08 helped keep the nightclub operating when redevelopment threatened it.
In September 2025, Lakota opened Moon Club as a standalone venue in Bristol. The club has capacity for 220 people and a quadraphonic L-Acoustics sound system. Nick Warren was a Friday-night resident at Lakota before later holding a residency at Cream.
