Public Works is a club and event promoter operating in the San Francisco and Oakland area, with events at its San Francisco venue. Co-founder Jeff Whitmore opened the venue in 2010; its first event was an arts programme staged during construction, ending with a mural on the building’s exterior. The address is 161 Erie Street in the Mission District, and the venue has a Funktion-One sound system, a sprung hardwood dance floor and an upstairs loft.
Its programme spans dance events, live performances, storytelling, comedy and art, including The Moth, Odd Salon, Speechless and HellaFunny. DJs who have played there include LTJ Bukem, Carl Cox, Moodymann and Laurent Garnier. Public Works has hosted Noisepop Festival’s annual Culture Club events and marathon DJ sets. In 2020, it launched As You Like It Recordings, focused on Bay Area artists. The venue marked its 12th anniversary in 2022 with a four-day programme featuring Jeff Mills and Amon Tobin.
