ROXY Prague is based at Dlouhá 33 in Prague, where the club opened in 1992 with a performance by American post-hardcore band Fugazi. The building had opened as a cinema in 1927 and later served as a community hall for a Jewish cultural association; cultural activity there dates to 1928. Before ROXY’s club era, the building was used by FAMU for filming, and concerts and performances took place among its ruins.
Early club programming included hardcore, hip-hop and house parties, with the Roxydust agency bringing an Amsterdam house-party influence. ROXY gave space to emerging house and hip-hop sounds and helped shape the Czech underground music scene in the 1990s. Its programming has ranged across genres including house, techno and drum and bass, with Hospital and RAM associated with its club nights. Artists at ROXY events have included Andy C, Wilkinson, Hybrid Minds and Fox Stevenson.
Chris Sadler’s house residency Climax began at ROXY in 1998, featuring international DJs, Czech performers and newcomers. A renovation in 2010 added a foyer, a chill-out area and a balcony, while retaining the main hall and stage. The hall accommodates 750 standing; a lounge holds 100 and the balcony 150. ROXY operates alongside NoD, which has a café, gallery and theatre on the floor above. The Linhart Foundation, established in 1987 to support artists, was central to ROXY’s activities and character in the 1980s.
