The Operatives

The Operatives is a Melbourne collective established by Jerry Poon, known as JPS, after his involvement with Elementz Sound Collective. Starting in the mid-2000s, it first centred its music program on drum and bass, then expanded into other genres. Poon’s aim included creating greater representation for Asia-Pacific artists. The organisation promotes events and tours artists, and has worked in booking, artist management and production as well as running a record label. It has also taken Australian performers to audiences overseas.

Its events have been staged at Misfits, Howler, The Third Day and Melbourne Pavilion. Artists presented have included Nia Archives, Goldie and Flying Lotus. The Operatives also launched Remedy, a monthly event that directed its profits to a charitable cause. Its in-house label has released music by Australian artists including AMIN PAYNE and SILENTJAY.

Espionage, a touring series launched in 2010, brought together local and international performers with visual elements in distinctive venues. The series began in a venue above a karaoke bar and later expanded to larger dance floors. Its artists toured in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

In 2020, The Operatives marked its 15th anniversary with a Melbourne event at The Third Day featuring David Rodigan, Conducta and local artists.
