Village Underground Lisboa

Village Underground Lisboa opened in Alcântara in 2014, bringing a London-created venue concept to Lisbon. Co-founder Mariana Duarte Silva established the project in her home city. The site occupies a former carbarn beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge, with old shipping containers and repurposed buses forming part of its structure. A sister venue to Village Underground in London, it combines workspaces with an arts centre.

The containers provide coworking areas, while buses have been adapted for use as a café and meeting room. The site also has the Metalbox recording studio, a club room and a central courtyard. In 2019, it gained a separate entrance on Avenida da Índia, replacing access through the Carris Museum; its address is Avenida da Índia 52.

The club presents a weekly programme with Portuguese and international performers, spanning house, techno, trance and dub as well as hip-hop and trap. Artists appearing at its events have included Xtanki, YLS, Zero and DJ Hype. The Container project provides a performance setting for emerging electronic artists, with live sound and streaming technology. Parties have taken place outdoors and in the indoor club.

In 2020 the project turned more towards producing and broadcasting work in music, dance, theatre and street art. The venue marked its tenth anniversary with more than 30 artists performing across two stages.
