The venue began as the Lido Theatre in 1965; the basement later housed the Lido Cabaret and the 600-seat Total Theatre. It operated as Billboard from 1980, taking the name 170 Russell in 2014. Total House is a Brutalist building listed on the Victorian Heritage Register in May 2014.
The venue has three entertainment rooms and five bars, with dedicated DJ equipment in each room. Its main room has a d&b audiotechnik J-Series PA system, and its capacity is 1,050. Promoters running events there include Run 'n Chase, Twisted Audio and Rainbow Serpent Festival. Friction and K Motionz are among the artists to have performed at 170 Russell.
