Belgrave Music Hall stands at 1-1A Cross Belgrave Street in Leeds’ Northern Quarter. Built as Leeds Children’s Palace, it began operating in 1934 as a three-level recreation hall and nursery school for working families. Following neglect and restoration, the building reopened in 2013 as Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen. Leeds promoters Simon Stevens and Ash Kollakowski founded the venue with co-founder Dan Crouch.
Across its three floors, the venue has a first-floor performance room, two bars, two kitchens and a roof terrace. Its event space holds 300 people. The programme covers live music, comedy, film and art exhibitions, and resident DJs play in the Canteen seven days a week. Event promoters have included Super Friendz presents and Futuresound Events. In 2013, Stevens and Kollakowski also started the promotions company Super Friendz to run the venue’s programming and provide a setting for their existing events.
Artists who have performed there include Stormzy, Jorja Smith, Little Simz and Royal Blood. Food events include the monthly Belgrave Feast, a street-food festival, and Belgrave Street Feast, which began as a quarterly event curated by Belgrave Music Hall, Northern StrEATs and Sandinista. The resident kitchens have included Layne’s Espresso and Bundobust. In 2023, the Belgrave team joined Brudenell Social Club, Welcome Skate Store and Super Friendz to launch Project House, a 1,000-capacity event venue in Leeds.
