Chinese Laundry

Founded in Sydney in 1996, Chinese Laundry stopped operating in 2020 and reopened on June 28, 2024. The club is beneath the Slip Inn at 111 Sussex Street, in a sandstone basement within a century-old building; entry is through the inn’s rear. Its capacity is about 800.

The venue has three rooms and an outdoor courtyard, with spaces known as The Laundry, The Cave and The Sand Bar. Two rooms have Martin Audio sound systems, and the DJ booths were updated for the reopening. Low ceilings and stripped-back lighting are also features of the club. Its music spans house, techno, jungle and bass.

Chinese Laundry regularly books international, interstate and local artists. Its Chinese Laundry Invites night connects local gatherings with artists and record labels from overseas. Refuge has held regular parties there, and events have also been run by Chinese Laundry, Decay (AU), Charades and FOREIGNDUB. Jeff Mills and Sasha have played at the club; Flume and Dom Dolla were among its bookings before the 2020 closure.
