Detroit Shipping Company stands at 474 Peterboro Street in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, in Midtown. It opened on July 13, 2018, three years after being announced in August 2015 as ShipYard Detroit. Jonathan Hartzell and James Therkalsen developed the project with architect Dominic Walbridge. What started as a beer-garden concept became a two-level venue built from 21 refurbished shipping containers, with room for about 700 people.
A courtyard and roof decks surround the central stage, food stalls, bars, retail units and artist spaces. Event areas include the Bridge Lounge, Upper Decker, West Wing Galleries and outdoor areas, and the first stage was built from a 40-foot container. The complex combines a food hall, beer garden, galleries and a podcast studio, with food vendors such as Motor Burger, Bangkok 96 Street Food, Konjo and Me Momo Cha.
Live music and DJ nights span techno, ambient, electro and experimental sounds, and the DSC Decks series hosts open decks and local DJs, with RETCON and Kuuma as resident hosts in 2025. Bass Face Collective has organised events at the venue, and artists who have performed there include DJ FLP, Obi-Wan Shinobi, Seanni B and TYP4.
