Epiphany Center for the Arts occupies the former Church of the Epiphany at 201 S Ashland Ave in Chicago. The church, designed by Edward Burling and Francis Whitehouse, was built in 1885, with additions made in 1895. Chicago landmark status followed in the mid-1990s, and the building entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
The church closed in 2011. Developer David Chase and Kimberly Rachal acquired the property in 2017 and converted it into an arts centre, which opened in September 2020. The 42,000-square-foot site contains Epiphany Hall, The Sanctuary and The Catacombs, alongside a café, courtyard, galleries and artist studios. Epiphany Hall, in the former church sanctuary, seats up to 460 for formal dining; its stated reception capacity with The Catacombs is 1,050. The Sanctuary holds 150 and was used for Black Panthers meetings in the 1960s, as well as Fred Hampton’s memorial.
The basement Catacombs hosts house music, old-school classics and late-night electronic events, with a Meyer sound system serving the venue. Dnbid has run events there, and artists who have played include Renan, Stunna, Mister Shifter and Danny The Wildchild. The wider programme spans live music, dance, theatre, comedy and literary arts, with Chicago Symphony Orchestra chamber groups and Negaunee Music Institute programmes also presented at the centre. In 2021, the venue received the Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Adaptive Reuse. The Catacombs hosted ECLIPSE 4.0 in January 2026.
