fabric began operating in 1999 in a former Victorian meat warehouse in Smithfield, London, at 77a Charterhouse St. Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie founded the club. Its first public event centred on drum and bass, and Friday programming developed around bass-heavy music. Following a 2016 closure and licensing dispute, fabric reopened in January 2017 under 32 new licensing conditions.
Three music rooms occupy more than 2,250 square metres, with capacity for 1,600. Room One’s bodysonic floor uses transducers beneath the surface to carry bass vibrations to dancers. fabric replaced its original sound system in 2000 and upgraded it in 2024; Room Two uses Pioneer Pro Audio equipment. Moving Magnet linear transducers, supplied in partnership with Powersoft, were installed beneath Room One’s floor in 2025.
Friday nights divide between Fabriclive, covering drum and bass, grime, dubstep and UK garage, and Forms, which presents house, techno and disco. Saturday selections include house, techno, electro and minimal, with Craig Richards and Terry Francis as residents. Regular artists include Fabio & Grooverider, Kasra, DJ Flight and Enei. The club began its mix-CD series in 2001 and launched Houndstooth in 2013; its two labels are Houndstooth and Fabric Records.
