Gut Level is a not-for-profit DIY venue and community space in central Sheffield, located at 32-34 Chapel Walk. Four friends from the city’s underground party scene founded it in 2019. Its first base was beneath a disused railway arch at Attercliffe Arches, which closed during the early Covid-19 pandemic. The venue later moved to Snow Lane, leaving in 2022 when redevelopment plans emerged, and then occupied Eyre Street temporarily in a former morgue converted to studios. In 2024 it established its Chapel Walk venue in a former café.
The two-floor Chapel Walk space has a roof terrace with the Wet Patch community garden. In November 2025, Gut Level secured community ownership of the property through the Music Venues Trust’s Own Our Venues campaign. Its activities span electronic music, club culture, workshops, gigs and other community events. Parties contribute funding for community projects, while membership subscriptions, events and drinks help provide community members with free or low-cost space.
House-focused and queer club nights have featured promoters including Gut Level Sheffield, Calabash! and Aquifer. Artists who have performed there include Gilles Peterson, SAMA (NL), Jaymie and Tilly. FLAW Collective leads DJ and creative workshops for women and LGBTQ+ people, and Gut Pleasers brings people together for a monthly low-cost meal. The venue hosts a monthly QTIBPOC Film Club meetup for QTIBPOC people in Sheffield. Anti Raids shares skills and knowledge to help people resist immigration raids, while Radical Pride Sheffield organises a Pride event as a protest independent of corporations and police.
