halle02

halle02 is a live music and club venue at Zollhofgarten 2 in Heidelberg’s Bahnstadt district, Germany. It opened on 13 April 2002 inside the city’s former freight station, established by a four-person Atelier Kontrast team with help from volunteers and friends. The project was initially planned to run for 18 months. Exhibitions and music formed its early programme, alongside theatre, readings, DJ sets, concerts and parties; live concerts grew more prominent over time.

The long brick freight hall underwent a major renovation from 2013 to early 2016, and a dedicated club room was added. The renovated complex has a main event hall with capacity for 1,200, a foyer for 230 and a club room for 440. The club room reopened on 27 March 2015 with a Funktion-One sound system. The main hall covers nearly 700 square metres, while the former freight-hall building stretches 227 metres.

Club programming has ranged from house and techno to drum and bass, with monthly events in those styles. Drum’n’Bass nights have featured Liquicity as a promoter. Artists to play the venue include Sigma, Camo & Krooked, Shy FX and Ben Klock. Alongside club events, halle02 has hosted festivals, markets and exhibitions, as well as live performances by artists including Casper and Paul Kalkbrenner. Kleine Freiheit, an outdoor cultural space, was established in 2021.
