Ngaio Marsh Theatre is a performance venue at Level Two of Haere-roa, 90 Ilam Road, at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. The original theatre opened in 1967, replacing the Little Theatre, which had been destroyed by fire in 1948. Dame Ngaio Marsh, who led the university drama society from 1942 to 1969, directed its first production, Twelfth Night. The building was badly damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and demolished in October 2016; DramaSoc performed elsewhere until the rebuilt theatre opened.
Haere-roa, the UCSA building that houses the theatre, opened in July 2019. The rebuilt venue has retractable seating, with capacity for 330 seated or up to 1,000 standing, and a d&b audiotechnik sound system. UCSA, the University of Canterbury Students' Association, runs events there. Artists who have played include Dillinja, Goldie, Grooverider and KC Lights. The theatre officially opened on 2 August 2019 with a student production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Re-Orientation that year included performances by Mitch James, Sachi and Skegss.
