Sidney & Matilda

Sidney & Matilda opened in Sheffield in 2018 inside a former paper factory at Rivelin Works, 46B Sidney St. Artist, curator and producer Al Daw founded it as an art gallery and creative space before it expanded to include live music. Its name combines Sidney Street and Matilda Street, which the building straddles. Paul “Tufty” Tuffs joined to help with gigs in the basement and is the venue’s owner.

The venue has three rooms, alongside a warehouse bar, courtyard and gallery space. Its largest room, the Gallery Room, holds 300 people and has hosted Horse Meat Disco, Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, Greg Wilson, Erol Alkan and Sally C. The Basement Room is downstairs, with room for 180, dark lighting, a low ceiling and a sub-heavy sound; it is used for club nights. The Factory Room, the smallest, has an 80-person capacity. Resident DJs play in the Warehouse bar, which sometimes features guest DJs.

Sidney & Matilda runs live music, club nights, comedy and art events, including exhibitions, with local acts and touring performers. Events have been organised by local promoters Steel Dancin’, Bass Off and Funky Drummer, as well as Unity Underground and Grey Meta. The venue’s annual Other Festival takes place over the Tramlines weekend and celebrates local talent. In July 2025, it received the Exposed Award for Best Live Venue.
