Stellwerk began operating in September 2005 as a jazz club inside Hamburg-Harburg station, at Hannoversche Straße 85. The venue uses a former third-class waiting room that Deutsche Bahn later turned into a training signal box; the space was unused from the 1980s. The Förderverein Jazzclub Hamburg e. V., established in 2001 by Dieter Glawischnig, Ulita Knaus and Heiko Langanke, preceded the club. In November 2011, its programme widened beyond jazz.
Under new management from 2012, Stellwerk has presented music including Goa, techno and hip-hop, as well as poetry slams and film screenings. Promoters Shut Up! and Liquid Concrete have held events there. Artists who have performed at the venue include Eightball, Fibe, IAM and DJ Dommenjay. The club is operated by Förderverein Stellwerk Hamburg e. V., whose managing director is Mats Wollny. Its annual programme includes 150 to 200 music events.
Three spaces make up the venue: a concert hall with capacity for 199, a lounge that accommodates about 150, and a backstage room for roughly 20. The hall has a bar, a fixed grandstand, a stage box and a sound system; the lounge is also equipped with a bar and sound system. Technical gear includes two PA systems, DJ mixers, Pioneer CDJs and Technics MK2 turntables.
