The Art School is the public venue of the Glasgow School of Art Students’ Association, a student- and artist-led non-profit organisation founded in 1908 and recognised by the school in 1941. Its building, the Assembly Building, was constructed from 1927 to 1930 by architects John, Keppie & Henderson. Before the association took it over, the building was used for school balls, parties and graduation ceremonies; it has served as the association’s base since the 1970s. The venue is at 20 Scott Street in Glasgow.
Its spaces include the Assembly Hall, project areas and the Vic Café Bar, with capacity for about 800 people. During work on the Reid Building, the venue moved temporarily from Renfrew Street to 54 Sauchiehall Street, reopening on Garnethill in 2014. It hosts live music, club nights, films and educational events, with nights run by promoters including Good and D/ranged Collective. Electronic artists who have performed there include SOPHIE, Powder, Marcel Dettmann and Andy Stott. In November 2019, club nights and live gigs were suspended amid financial difficulties; the commercial operator, GSASA Ltd, entered liquidation in January 2020.
