The Black Box

The Black Box is a two-room club at 314 East 13th Avenue in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighbourhood. Nicole Cacciavillano founded it after promoting dubstep events through Sub.mission, which she established in 2007.

The venue opened on 19 November 2016 in a space previously occupied by Quixote’s True Blue and Bender’s Tavern. The building’s earlier uses included Denver’s first Piggly Wiggly, office buildings, a goth club, a punk club and a Grateful Dead bar. Sub.mission and Cacciavillano took over the East 13th Avenue site before opening the club.

The main room and Lounge are joined by a patio with a small stage and DJ booth. The club has a capacity of about 500, and its sound equipment was assembled by Fort Collins company Bass Couch. In the main room, the custom system combines Tannoy IQ10C speakers, Funktion-One F215MK2 speakers and Othorn subwoofers. The Lounge has its own Tannoy speakers and four Othorn subwoofers.

Programming centres on bass music and dubstep, with drum and bass, hip-hop and experimental music also on the bill. Sub.mission’s weekly Tuesday event became a regular fixture, and Electronic Tuesdays launched with the venue in November 2016. RECON DNB and metaMorph_ are among the promoters to have run events there. Artists who have played include Sinistarr, Darkstar, Visages and Mystic State.
