The Chapel Angel Microbrewery

The Chapel Angel Microbrewery is an upstairs live-music room within the Old Angel Inn on Stoney Street, in Nottingham’s Lace Market. The pub stands in an 18th-century building, modified in 1878 and 1883, with Grade II status. In 1871, the chapel hosted a meeting of the Ancient Order of Druids; musical activity there later included choral gatherings, while piano music was played in the Vaults bar.

During the 1980s, the upstairs function room became a rock and roll venue. The Chapel has since presented indie, rock, folk and dance, with Oasis, Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys among its performers. It featured in the second series of Channel 4’s Rock School, when Gene Simmons attended a performance. After the Old Angel announced its closure in 2016, Ben Rose took over; the pub reopened following refurbishment, and Rose has owned it since that year.

The pub combines the music room with a microbrewery and a restaurant serving traditional-style gastro food. A 2.5-barrel brewery was fitted at the Old Angel in late 2016, and its ales are made on site with locally grown hops. The bar accommodates about 200 people, while the upstairs venue has room for around 110. An upgraded sound system accompanied a programme that extended beyond the room’s earlier punk association. Events by Interstellar Audio and Shatterdnb have featured performers such as Cellar, Keeno and MissGray. The Angel added the upstairs Chesterfield Lounge in 2024.
