The Fox and Firkin

The Fox and Firkin is a pub and performance venue at 316 Lewisham High Street, London. Its earlier name was the Black Bull, a pub dating to the 19th century. In May 1980, it reopened under its present name as the second establishment in David Bruce’s Firkin chain. A brewhouse once stood at the far end of the bar, where a porthole let customers observe the brewing.

With room for about 350 people, the venue has an indoor stage and a garden at the rear. The garden includes the Firkin Express, a 1950s first-class railway carriage from the Kent and East Sussex line. Firkin Brewery restarted production in Lewisham in 2023 at a former Sainsbury’s warehouse behind the pub, accessible from the garden. Its programme includes dub, house, jungle and drum and bass, with live shows, DJ events, dancing and sound-system parties. London Elektricity and Ray Keith are among the artists who have played there.
