The Government Center is a record shop, bar, coffee shop and live performance space at 715 East Street in Pittsburgh’s North Side. Josh Cozby moved from Oregon to Pittsburgh to open a record store, which began on East Ohio Street in 2019. The venue takes its name from a song by Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers.
In 2020, Cozby bought the East Street building, formerly occupied by Key West, and moved the business there in 2021, adding a performance stage. The larger site brought the shop and its listening lounge together with a space for live music and events; capacity is about 75. Programming has included indie and experimental acts, DJs, listening parties, film screenings and album-release events. Stealth1 has played there. Its performers mix Pittsburgh artists and touring musicians. In 2022, all-ages shows took place two or three nights weekly.
