Venue / dancefloor
The Lubber Fiend is a DIY music venue and bar at 81 Blandford Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. It opened in May 2022 in a former abattoir, founded by Sam Booth, Tom Hopkin and Stephen “Bish” Bishop, with Slack’s Radio founder Jon Cornbill also involved. The founders began work on the venue after searching for a place for their band to play. A crowdfunding campaign in 2021 helped pay for building work and a PA system.
The venue occupies the first floor, with a capacity of 140; Lubber Kitchen and Slack’s Radio are downstairs. One Nine Sound built two systems: a Funktion-One rig for club nights and a hi-fi setup for live music. Its programme includes gigs across genres, club nights, film screenings and markets. Promoters running events there include John Cullingworth, PULSE, Salaman and SWEET N SOUR NCL. Artists who have played include Jubei, Philth, MintJuulPod, melba and e-kitty.
