The Piston sits at 937 Bloor Street West in Toronto’s Bloor West area, west of Ossington Subway Station. It opened in 2010 and has a capacity of 140. A front bar is separate from the performance and dance area at the back. The stage is 14 feet wide and 10 feet deep, with a height of 9 feet and a floor 2 feet above ground level. Audio comes from two Unity 15-inch horn-loaded mains and three Paraline subwoofers, whose six 12-inch drivers provide a total of 6,200 watts.
Recurring parties span disco, dance music from the 1980s and 1990s, and underground electronic sounds including techno, drum and bass and house. At Friday’s Wax Candy, resident DJ Cyclist plays disco and club classics. Bodyclock is a queer- and BIPOC-centric underground electronic party featuring local selectors. Juicebox, a monthly all-vinyl dance party, has run since 2014. Miss Kleio has both promoted events and performed at the venue; Rival Soundsystem has promoted events, while Zola (TRM), Rhombi and Sappho.XD have also played there.
