TivoliVredenburg, at Vredenburgkade 11 in Utrecht, brings several concert halls together under one roof, each designed for a different musical setting. The complex opened in 2014, merging the organisations behind pop venue Tivoli and Muziekcentrum Vredenburg, and King Willem-Alexander officially opened it on 21 June 2014. Tivoli’s story goes back to a public garden founded in 1823, which gained a concert hall in 1871; Tivoli Oudegracht became a legal pop venue in 1982. Muziekcentrum Vredenburg opened in 1979 and presented classical, jazz, pop and world music.
The largest pop hall, Ronda, holds up to 2,000 people, while the Grote Zaal was designed by Herman Hertzberger in the 1970s. Cloud Nine was built as a jazz hall with a fixed stage and balcony, and Club Nine, which grew out of an adjoining café, hosts smaller shows. The Rabo Open Stage in the central hall gives emerging musicians from the Utrecht area a platform, and the building also has an indoor park on its sixth level, a grand café and a restaurant. Black Sun Empire, Neonlight, Mandidextrous, Merikan and Prolix have played there. The venue welcomed its millionth visitor within a year of opening and 1.2 million visitors in 2019.
