Wibar is a nightclub in an industrial former factory at Willem Barentszstraat 39, on Leiden’s De Waard business park. Len van Brussel and Erik Lourensen established the venue to provide space for the city’s subcultures. Its official opening, called the Permit Party, followed municipal approval and took place in June 2019. The two-year permit issued that year allowed dance parties twice monthly. The name Wibar comes from Willem Barentszstraat.
The venue has a 350-square-metre main hall, a 100-square-metre smaller hall and an outdoor terrace of 110 square metres, with capacity for about 500 people. Its programme crosses musical styles and subcultures, with club nights, live performances, exhibitions and other cultural events. DUB71, a roots, reggae and dub night, has taken place there. Wibar has worked with Doorgedraaid and its Sfeeringenieurs on event management, decor, branding and creative production. The industrial building has professional sound, lighting and video facilities. Phace and Emperor are among the artists who have performed at Wibar.
