Born in Dartford and raised in Maidstone, Robert Dickeson worked as a drum-and-bass producer and DJ under the name Apex. Before starting his solo work in 2007, he was one half of the duo Unknown Error. His first Apex release, Space Between, featured Ayah and came out on Hospital Records that year; the track also entered BBC Radio 1’s Drum & Bass Top Ten. Dickeson later released music as Robert Oaks and Midnight Lamp, and helped establish Lifted Music with Chris Renegade, Spor, Evol Intent and Ewun.
Apex released the Wall of Sound EP on Lifted Music in 2008, followed by the single “By the Way / Yearning VIP” on Horizons Music that year. Lifted Music also put out the 2010 single “Entrapment / Gonzo”; the following year, Apex released “Inner Space / Energy Lines” on Subtitles Music (UK). Apex’s remix of London Elektricity’s “Just One Second” appeared on the album Sick Music. Later releases included the 2018 single “Echoes” on Hospital Records. His music also appeared on Renegade Hardware.
