Chopstick Dubplate began in 1998, founded by Jacky Murda as a label and collective working across jungle and reggae soundsystem music. Its members have included Jacky Murda, King Yoof, Tuffist and Aries, with the lineup changing over time. The collective has operated from London, Barcelona, Bristol and San Francisco. King Yoof described a shared studio used by himself, Aries and Jacky Murda, while its work has paired reggae vocalists with original soundsystem productions and jungle versions of classic reggae riddims. RCola was also a founder, and Liondub joined the group in 2003. Aries met Jacky Murda in 2007, began making tracks with him, and joined Chopstick Dubplate around six to twelve months later.
Chopstick Dubplate became associated with ragga-jungle 10-inch releases featuring vocalists including Terry Ganzie, Pinchers, Johnny Osbourne and Jah Mason. Top Cat and Mr. Williamz have also appeared among its collaborators and featured singers. Later releases include the albums Give Me A Dubplate and Tonight, as well as the EPs Version I, Version III and 420. The 2004 album 21 Murda Shots was followed by Chopstick Meets River Nile in 2010. The collective released Chopstick Meets Williamz in London and Wanted in 2013, then Worldwide Traveller in 2014. A 2017 single, “Shape Of You Remix,” featured General Levy. The 2020 album Chicken Shop features Natty Campbell and remixes by DJ Gaw and Alcemist.
Its vocal roster has also included Ragga Twins, Bunny Lye Lye and Daddy Freddy, and the collective has worked with remixers including Nightshift and Interrupt. Tonight features Nanci Correia, Cheshire Cat and Eccleton Jarrett alongside Mr Williamz and Daddy Freddy. Legacy - Original 10" Vinyl Masters includes collaborations with Tuffest and Barry Brown, as well as vocalists previously associated with the collective.
