DJ Dextrous, born Errol Francis, grew up in Stoke Newington, Hackney, London. He began playing parties and small clubs in 1987, then released his first record, “Ruffneck Bizznizz”, in 1992 on Ruff Quality Recordings. In a 2020 interview, Francis recalled balancing music-making at night with a job as a council finance administrator. He also said he supplied exclusive records to DJ Brockie. His early work included the 1993 single “Lovable”, featuring Erin Lordan; Francis said it began as a full song and grew out of a gathering involving Shut Up & Dance and Ruff Quality Recordings.
In 1993, Francis co-founded King of the Jungle Records with Rude Boy Keith, and the two performed and recorded as Kings of the Jungle. Their releases included the Da Kings of the Jungle trilogy on Suburban Base, with the 1994 singles “Da Kings of the Jungle Part One” and “Da Kings of the Jungle Pt. 3” appearing on the label. Francis also worked with producer Teebone under aliases including Fusion Forum and the Regulators. As Fusion Forum, they released “Vintage Keys” and “Summer Mist” on Reinforced Records.
Francis recorded as Solid State with Paul Brown and Jon Stewart, a trio associated with the development of liquid drum and bass. He also started State of the Art Recordings with Brown and Stewart, and his label work included Subversive Recordings. Away from club releases, Francis composed music for the documentary Feltham Sings. His work on the film earned an Ivor Novello Award, and the documentary also received a BAFTA Award.
Later releases included the 2014 single “Hot Flame Remix” with H Pee and Papa Gee on RIQYARDROCK. In 2023, “Charged Remixes” appeared as a single on Suburban Base.
