Flite was the drum-and-bass alias of Virginia-born producer Justin Hawkes, who began his music career in 2011 and started releasing music under the name in 2013. His first Flite track, Blue Spark, received support from Liquicity. In a 2019 interview, Hawkes said he had been producing drum and bass for eight years and had learned about the genre through UKF. His first EP as Flite, The Cure, came out on Liquicity Records. The later EP Calm Before The Storm took years to complete, with some tracks requiring two years of work.
Flite’s drum-and-bass production ranged from liquid and melodic material to more aggressive styles, including dancefloor tracks, and Hawkes also contributed vocals and lyrics. His releases appeared on UKF, Liquicity Records, Hospital Records and Monstercat. UKF released Progression in 2017, and Tragedy, Humanity featured on the compilation UKF10 – Ten Years Of UKF.
Flite made remixes for Matrix & Futurebound, RL Grime and DJ Fresh, and collaborated with Audioscribe on Hymn. Another collaboration was Elevate, credited to Muzzy & Flite featuring Miss Trouble. Flite and producer Ownglow also created Skankout, a drum-and-bass media project intended to support and showcase the American scene.
In 2015, Flite released Colorless with Justin Hawkes. His 2020 releases included Joy / Fairy with Justin Hawkes on Liquicity Records, Run Away (Sampler, Pt. 2) on Viper Recordings and Empathy on Flite.
