South London producer Rajpal Kalsi began making hip-hop in 1997 before moving into grime and dubstep. He entered dubstep as an artist in 2005 with the Heavens Reject EP, then released music under the names Kromestar and IronSoul. “Kalawanji” was an early release on Deep Medi Musik; a 2006 single of the same name also appeared on Nebula Music Group. Kromestar’s releases have since come out through labels including Cosmic Bridge, Deep Heads and Krome & Type Recordings, as well as his own imprints.
In 2009, Kromestar released the album My Sound, followed that year by The Other Syde. The producer also runs Nebula Music Group, which has put out Kromestar’s own music and work by Quest and Sukh Knight. Alongside his production, Kalsi works as a mastering engineer in the UK dubstep and grime scenes. He has also released music through Kromestar Recordings, while Hotflush Recordings is among the labels associated with his output.
Kalsi has said that making music helps him express and process difficult moods and emotions. He made the album Tears of Joy in memory of his son, and proceeds from its release went to charity; the experience left the album too painful for him to listen to afterwards. He made Visions with Danny Scrilla by working remotely over Skype, exchanging ideas and developing tracks together. Kromestar’s later releases include the 2023 single Nu Era Dub VIP on Krome & Type Recordings and the 2024 single Slap on Dubstep Onslaught.
In 2024, Kromestar released the single Tokyo / Devilman (Krome & Type Remixes) on Boka Records with AxH. His 2025 singles include Don't Be Afraid, made with Breezy Lee and Sgt Pokes for Wheel & Deal Records, and Graveyard / The Cube on Nebula Music Group.
