Magnetic Soul is the Hong Kong drum and bass duo of Cookie and Johnathan Chan, promoting the city’s longest-running night in the genre. Cookie traced his introduction to jungle to Amsterdam in 1997; after moving to Hong Kong, he put on Magnetic Soul’s first event there. The crew began organising nights in June 2005, bringing local, regional and UK artists to the city. Its work combines DJing, production and event promotion, with a focus on building a local drum and bass community. Magnetic Soul marked 19 years of drum-and-bass events in Hong Kong in September 2024.
Magnetic Soul has taken its events around Asia, performing in Guam, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Artists hosted by the duo include Goldie, Roni Size, LTJ Bukem, Fabio, Ed Rush and Optical. Its sound is soulful and liquid-leaning, with jazz, liquid funk and rolling drum and bass also used to describe its approach. In 2019, the duo released the 12-track album The Pressure through Soul Deep Recordings, its first album.
Magnetic Soul followed with the Mixology EP on Soul Deep Recordings in March 2020, then issued the Dreamworld EP in September that year, featuring Dan Stezo. The duo also remixed “Dime Piece” by Calculon, Stunna and Lailah Reich for Shoot Recordings. Magnetic Soul’s first event listed on Resident Advisor was in 2008. In 2025, Magnetic Soul marked 20 years as an outfit. That year, it released the Beyond The Sunset EP on Liquid Drops, featuring its collaboration with Kutoff (HK) on the title track.
