Marcelinho da Lua is a DJ, singer and music producer born in Rio de Janeiro in 1972. He began working in a recording studio in the late 1980s, starting out as a roadie and sound technician and spending about a decade learning recording and production while working with Brazilian musicians. His solo music combines Brazilian styles with electronic sounds, including drum and bass. In 1997, he joined Márcio Menescal and Alexandre Moreira to form Bossacucanova, a group that brings bossa nova together with electronic production.
His solo album Tranqüilo features João Donato, Seu Jorge, Black Alien, Bi Ribeiro and Mart'nália among its collaborators. Released in 2004, it combines Brazilian popular music with electronic beats. His subsequent album Social, released in 2007, features Martinho da Vila, João Donato, Bi Ribeiro, Amora Pêra and Fernanda Gonzaga. Both albums received the Brazilian Music TIM Award in the electronica category. The tracks “Cotidiano” and “Refazenda” won Best Electronic Video awards from MTV Brazil.
He worked with Mad Professor on the album Mad Professor Meets Marcelinho da Lua In a Dubwise Style, alongside Bi Ribeiro, Black Alien, Roberto Menescal, Mart’nália and Seu Jorge. As a member of Bossacucanova, Marcelinho da Lua contributed to Brasilidade, an album nominated for a Latin Grammy.
Marcelinho da Lua’s 2019 album Insolente brings together samba, hip-hop, drum and bass, reggae and bossa nova, with Marcelo D2, Larissa Luz, Otto and Pedro Luís among its guests. He described the record as retaining his recognizable musical signature while taking a different approach to production and arrangements. He remains a member of Bossacucanova. As a DJ, he has played most often in Rio de Janeiro, including at D-Edge RIO in 2024 and at a venue on Rua Acre in 2025. In May 2026, he played at Rua Morais e Vale.
