Born in Montana and raised in Arizona, Sam Reeves took the name Ownglow for his drum-and-bass production and DJ work. As a teenager, Reeves left home to pursue music, later moving to the UK. He was based in Bournemouth in 2014 and living in London by 2015. Reeves has said that gaming montage music introduced him to drum and bass, including tracks he discovered through UKF, and that this led him towards producing. His first official release was the track pair “Gold” and “Tension” on Pilot Records. He later described wanting to bring an emotional, soulful quality back to the music, drawing on the atmospheric drum and bass he had heard when he was younger.
In 2016, Ownglow released the EP A Walk To Remember through Hospital Records. Reeves said its themes came from his own experience: leaving home at 15, being homeless in Los Angeles and eventually moving to London. He also made the EP’s artwork, building it around a 3D model of a mountain from his hometown. The following year brought the Hospital Records EP Inside The Silence, a four-track release featuring Mitekiss, Disco’s Over, Elle Vee, Dilemma and Courtney Odom.
Collaborations include “Just A Step Away” with Danny Byrd and “Polaroids Of You” with Boxplot, released through Liquicity Records. In 2018, Ownglow put out the singles “Won’t U” and “LA”. That year also brought “Strip It Down” and “Wonder” through Drum&BassArena, as well as “Eyes Wide Open (Destinations)” on Pilot Records.
In 2019, Ownglow released the single “Back To You [UKF10]” through UKF, followed by the UKF single “Do U?” in 2020. Ownglow also remixed Cartoon and Jéja’s “I Remember U.”
