Typecell

Typecell is the name used by German producer Guido Hoppe, who began DJing in Kassel in 1992 as DJ P.M.C. after a UK breakbeat tape introduced him to drum and bass around 1992–1993. He started producing in 1996, the year he founded Genetic Rhythm Records. Around 1999, Hoppe adopted the Typecell name for experimental productions drawing on techno and drum and bass. He described the music as reduced and hypnotic, focused on tools for DJs rather than song-led structures. His work spans drum and bass, techstep, neurofunk, dubstep and techno-influenced electronic music.

Hoppe later founded Protogen Records, a drum and bass label launched around 2002, and took on CEO and A&R roles at Protogen and Subplate Recordings. He established Subplate in 2004; the German label focuses mainly on deep, dark, minimal drum and bass and neurofunk. “Alone in the Dark” brought international attention to Typecell, Hoppe said in an interview, while “Intensity,” featuring Kaerry, was the track he then felt best represented his sound. In 2006, he was working on remixes and digital releases for Protogen while finishing tracks for an album planned for the label.

Typecell’s collaborations include work with Phace on “Subsystem” and with Antakto on “Abnormal.” His releases include the Multiverse EP, as well as the Subplate EPs All One of Us (2025) and Blocking into Oblivion (2026). He also released the EP Fucking Sad on Subplate. In 2007, he released the album Macrocosm Lp on Protogen Records. His 2026 releases include the single Humanity Is Lost on Warlock Audio and the single I Can Fix You on Muti Music.
