Auxiliary was founded in 2010 by drum and bass producer ASC as an outlet for his music. Its early sound drew on Autonomic, pairing electronica-influenced drum and bass with tempos around 170 or 85 BPM. The label grew out of the Autonomic scene and became independent from its seventh release. The label puts out experimental, emotionally oriented drum and bass, as well as ambient and experimental work, while keeping its yearly record output limited. Its debut was ASC’s 2010 single “The Touch,” accompanied by a Vaccine remix featuring Riya.
ASC accounts for much of Auxiliary’s output, alongside collaborations and tracks from other artists, including Aural Imbalance, Sam KDC and Method One. ASC and Ulrich Schnauss collaborated on the “77 EP.” The Symbol series invited collaborators to create deep, emotional music without prioritising DJ use or dancefloor suitability, and concluded with its ninth instalment.
Auxiliary’s sub-label Spatial focuses on atmospheric drum and bass, using classic breaks, moderate tempos and heavy 808 sub-bass, with an approach drawing on the mid-1990s scene. The label has staged events and showcases internationally, and ASC has presented its music at 170SD, a San Diego night.
