Phunkfiction Recordings was run by Roman Herbst, Carsten Lukas and Sebastian Wolters in 2005, with Herbst and Wolters working together on the label. Based near Hannover, Germany, it began its releases with the compilation The Breakbeat Lounge in 2004. Its second release, issued in May 2005, coupled Syncopix’s “Barbie Q.” with Stare’s “Strings Attached VIP.” The label’s vinyl output was drum and bass, spanning soulful, melodic material and deeper, harder sounds; it also allowed electro, NuBreaks and ambient on CD or DVD.
Basic Operations’ “4th Street Sound Click” and “Orange Krush” appeared in 2006, followed by Komatic’s DigiPhunk003 release in 2007 and Triad’s album Utopia in 2013. Other artists with releases on Phunkfiction Recordings included Lenzman, Submorphics and Madmen & Poets. The label’s releases covered drum and bass, electronica and deep house, and its main rule for any track was that it had enough phunk.
