Burdekin Hotel

Burdekin Hotel occupies the Oxford and Liverpool Street corner in Darlinghurst, Sydney. A hotel has operated on the site since the 1880s, while the current building dates to 1911–1912 and underwent major changes in 1938. From around the 1980s, it became a gathering place for Sydney’s gay and lesbian community. During the 1990s, events there included the launch of the lesbian magazine LIP.

The venue has hosted queer club nights and after-hours techno events, as well as emo nights and live bands. Event promoters have included WeLove, Something Else, Spektrum and La Famiglia. Launched in 2026, the Burdekin Bandroom has two rooms for live music, with capacities of 300 and 160, alongside a separate electronic-music room with capacity for 140.

The ground-floor Main Bar has a capacity of 255, a VOID sound system and a DJ booth. Level 1’s Mini Bar hosts live music, with a stage, dancefloor, exposed brick and arched windows facing Oxford Street. Its DJ setup includes two CDJ2000NXS players, a DJM900NXS mixer and a QSC K8 speaker; the room holds 140. The rooftop became publicly accessible in 2021 and is an open-air bar on the fifth floor, with views across Darlinghurst, Kings Cross and the CBD. Artists who have played at Burdekin Hotel include Trinity, Tsuki, Reaper and KiNK.
