Phoenix Landing opened in 1995 at 512 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge’s Central Square, combining pub operations with dance-club programming under owners Joe McCabe and Kevin Treanor. By 1999, Thursday events there featured techno and drum and bass. DJs Lenore and Crook started Elements as a weekly drum-and-bass night in January of that year, and Boston Magazine recognized it as the city’s Best Drum ’n’ Bass Night.
The club has hosted Modular, a weekly electronic-music event with local resident DJs and guest performers. Its programming also included reggae and hip-hop nights. In 2000, Boston Magazine named Phoenix Landing Best Club, Low-End, citing its trance and drum-and-bass events. That year the venue also held independent film events, a rooftop rave and an annual harbor cruise. Artists who have played there include Mizeyesis, DJ SS, Document One and S.P.Y.
