Dazee

Mari Stott began DJing at Bristol free parties and raves in 1992, playing hardcore jungle techno before building a career as Dazee. In 1993, Stott and Markee Substance co-founded Ruffneck Ting as a Bristol club night and label. Stott later took on management of Ruffneck Ting Records and became its figurehead. Early productions came from working with Markee Substance under the name Substance; Stott subsequently moved into solo production. Her early studio setup included an Atari computer, Cubase and a Roland sampler, equipment she has discussed while also describing her work teaching music production.

“Damn Right”, made with Markee Substance, appeared in 1996, and Stott has named it as a track she is especially proud of. Her productions and collaborations have been released through Ruffneck Ting, Breakbeat Culture, Colourstone, Siren Records and Hocus Pocus. Among her collaborators are Jinx, K Jah, Saxxon, Dawn Raid, Octopi, Substance, D Minds and Rap. In 2013, Stott relaunched Ruffneck Ting with a classics album and a new EP featuring her productions alongside work by Jinx and K Jah. She is also a resident for Ruffneck Ting and Run.

Stott’s sound draws on jungle rollers and steppers, jump-up and classic influences, with Bristol roots at its heart. In 2016, she made the concept album The Xtraordinary League Of Junglists with Ruffneck Ting regulars; the release came with vinyl and a comic. The project carried on with Level 1 and Level 2 in 2018. Her later releases include the EPs Glow (2020) and Invasion (2022), as well as the EP Head Drop (2025). The single “Watch the Bass”, made with Jenni Groves, was released on Ruffneck Ting.

In 2024, Stott joined Euphonique for the compilation Euphonique & Dazee Present: Welcome to the Jungle, extending her work across drum and bass and jungle. Her work as a DJ, producer and broadcaster remains connected to the Bristol scene where she started, while Ruffneck Ting continues as the label she co-founded and later managed.
