Roni Size is the stage name of Ryan Owen Granville Williams, an English DJ and record producer born in Bristol in 1969. He grew up in the city’s St Andrews neighbourhood, the son of Jamaican immigrant parents, and learned production at a local youth club. Reggae, hip-hop and Bristol sound-system culture shaped his early musical interests, while the city’s youth-club and soundsystem scene helped him develop his production skills. He later established links with other Bristol musicians, co-founding Full Cycle with Krust, Suv and DJ Die and helping set up Dope Dragon with the same collaborators.
In 1997, Size rose to prominence as founder and frontman of the drum-and-bass collective Roni Size & Reprazent. Their album New Forms won that year’s Mercury Prize. The group’s EP Reasons for Sharing came out through Talkin' Loud. Size also worked with DJ Die and vocalist Leonie Laws in Breakbeat Era; the trio released the album Ultra-Obscene in 1999. Reprazent returned with In the Mode in 2000, featuring guest vocals from Method Man and Zack de la Rocha, and Size released the solo album Touching Down in 2002.
Size’s music combines drum-and-bass production with jazz and soul influences, and uses live instrumentation. He described Reprazent’s live performance as moving from studio equipment and backing tracks towards a fully live show. His later work includes the 2018 single “Easy” with Rockwell, the 2020 single “Dayz (Benny L Remix)” with Benny L, and the 2021 single “Two Sides” with Collette Warren and Riya. He also made a remix for Paris Green on Get Physical and collaborated with Rag’n’Bone Man on “Calling.”
In 2026, Size released “Scrambled Eggs VIP” on Full Cycle and “My Story” with Vikter Duplaix on Mansion Sounds. He founded WTP, short for “Where’s The Party At?”, and his label connections also include V.
