Fixate, the alias of London producer Declan Curran, began making hip-hop beats at around 16, with DJ Premier’s production as an early influence. He moved from dubstep and 140 BPM music towards experiments at 170 BPM. His genre-spanning sound also draws on grime, footwork and UK garage, alongside drum and bass, jungle and dubstep.
Curran has described his DJ sets as eclectic, moving between darker drum and bass, half-time, breakbeat, hip-hop and jungle. Exit Records has been a primary label home; his releases have also appeared through Ice Cream Records and Future Retro London. His collaborations include Chimpo, Skeptical, Dismantle and Sam Binga. His early releases included the 2014 12-inch Pum Pum / System Malfunction on Diffrent Music and the 2015 EP Throwback Therapy on Exit Records. He has also released music on 20/20 LDN, Gutterfunk and Hospital Records.
His mini-album What Goes Around features collaborations with Skeptical on “The Rig Monkey” and Dismantle on “Firewater.” Fixate released the EP Anticipate on Pineapple Records, including the track “Issker” with Sam Binga. On his self-titled album, released by Exit Records in 2022, he collaborated with DRS, dBridge, Itoa and Cimm; he also worked with DRS on “Down.” Fixate contributed to the Richie Brains collaborative album project alongside Om Unit, Sam Binga, Alix Perez, Chimpo, Fracture and Stray.
