Grooverider is the stage name of London-born DJ and producer Raymond Bingham, who began DJing in the mid-1980s at south London pirate radio station Phase One, where he met Fabio. They later became residents at the Rage club night at Heaven, where Grooverider also met Goldie, and the two quickly connected. Grooverider and Fabio’s radio shows helped take drum and bass to a wider audience: they broadcast on Kiss 100 from 1994 to 1997 before moving to BBC Radio 1. Their work together also helped popularise early UK hardcore and drum and bass.
During the 1990s, Grooverider released tracks under the name Codename John, including “Sinister (The Influence Remix)” and “The Warning”. He founded Prototype, initially making its tunes himself while practising with his equipment, and also recorded as Inta Warriors. Prototype released work by Ed Rush, Dillinja and Boymerang, while Grooverider’s releases helped build the reputations of Matrix and Boymerang. The label’s 1997 album Grooverider Presents The Prototype Years appeared on Prototype Recordings and Columbia. Grooverider also organises Goldie’s Metalheadz club nights.
In 1998, Higher Ground, a Sony offshoot, released Grooverider’s album Mysteries of Funk, made with producer Optical. Matt Quinn engineered the album and also made dancefloor productions as Optical for Prototype. Its tracks include “Where Is Jack The Ripper,” “Rainbows Of Colour,” featuring vocals by Roya Arab, and “Starbase 23”. Grooverider’s 1999 single “Where's Jack the Ripper? (Remixes)” followed on Columbia. He later released the 2002 DJ mix album FABRICLIVE 6: Grooverider (DJ Mix) on fabric Records.
In 2015, Grooverider and Codename John released the single Grooverider Presents Codename John: The Avenger EP on Metalheadz. On 25 September 2026, Grooverider played an all-night set with Fabio at Night Tales.
