San Francisco native Zach Mad, who records as Mad Zach, has been based in Berlin. A producer and DJ, Mad Zach draws on hip-hop, West Coast bass, glitch, drum ’n’ bass, dub and trap. His sound has been described as dark and heavy, while his live performances bring together controllerism, finger drumming and DJing. Custom-built MIDI controllers and hardware are part of those sets, giving the performances a live production element alongside the DJing.
One early release was the 2011 single The Devil’s Dancehall on Muti Music. Mad Zach has also released the EPs Hypercube and Quantum Shock; the latter features collaborations with G Jones and Sayer, plus remixes by Bleep Bloop, Amp Live, Conrank and Pixelord. His releases have appeared on Muti Music, Mad Lab, Plasma, Saturate Records and Robox Neotech. He worked with Bay Area producer G Jones on Quantum Shock, and with R2 the Specialist on the album Wolf Spiders.
Out of Body was Mad Zach’s first EP for Alpha Pup. He released the EP No Past Lives on MethLab Recordings in 2019, including “What Is This Place?” with yunis. A release through Berlin label never not now followed with “nevernotnow 001”. In 2023, Mad Zach put out the single “Mexico 2 . Waterfalls 3” on Alpha Pup, the single “triplet after Denver” on Mad Lab and the single “Venice Evil” on never not now.
In 2025, Mad Zach released the single “Jet Engine (Mad Zach Remix)” on Sam Rosenzweig, with Sam Rosenzweig. In 2026, the single “antispace remixed 002” brought Mad Zach together with Sunda Arc and yunis. Mad Zach’s work spans releases on electronic labels including Alpha Pup, Muti Music, MethLab Recordings and never not now, while his performances put custom hardware and finger drumming alongside DJing.
