Born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Robert Haigh began using the name Omni Trio in 1992, choosing “Trio” to give a solo project the identity of a group. The project also grew from combining his existing musical ideas with sequencing and sampling. Haigh connected with Moving Shadow through members of 2 Bad Mice, and the label signed him for a couple of EPs.
Omni Trio’s first releases for Moving Shadow appeared in 1993, beginning a close association with the label. “Thru the Vibe”, “Mystic Stepper (Feel Better)” and “Living for the Future” are also among its best-known tracks. Haigh’s music as Omni Trio became associated with atmospheric, melodic drum and bass, as well as ambient and “intelligent” jungle. The project’s first full-length release, The Deepest Cut: Vol. 1, arrived in 1995 on Moving Shadow.
Moving Shadow released Haunted Science in 1996 and Skeleton Keys in 1997, followed by Byte Size Life in 1999. The label’s run of Omni Trio albums also included Even Angels Cast Shadows in 2001. Rogue Satellite, released in 2004, was Omni Trio’s final album. Haigh then stopped recording under the name.
“Renegade Snares” was another notable track from Omni Trio’s early releases. In 1993, Moving Shadow issued the single Step Off (Gold Blend Remix) / Feel Better (Foul Play Remix).
